What is hematuria?

Having blood in your urine (pee) can be a sign of a serious health problem, even if it happens only once. Ignoring hematuria can lead to the worsening of serious conditions like cancer and kidney disease

There are two types of hematuria:

  • If you can see the blood in your urine, it is called visible hematuria.
  • If you cannot see the blood in your urine but it is detected with a lab test under a microscope it is called microscopic or non-visible hematuria.

There are many reasons that you might have blood in your urine as urinary infection, bladder, ureteric or kidney stones, enlarged prostate, Kidney diseases, cancer of the bladder, kidney or prostate, medications and rare blood disorders. Strenuous exercise or a blow to the kidneys can also cause blood to show up in the urine.

What are the symptoms of blood in urine?

You may not notice any symptoms if you have microscopic hematuria. If you have gross hematuria, you may notice that your urine is pink, red or brown and you may also get blood clots in your urine, which can be painful.
